Wildfire in northeast Alachua County now 90% contained

​The state agency deployed eight bulldozers and a helicopter to battle the blaze. Firefighters from Alachua County, Melrose, LaCrosse, and Windsor aided in the effort to put out the fire.

Officials recommend avoiding CR 225 due to a brush fire

​Alachua County Fire Rescue units, along with Lacrosse Fire Rescue and Florida Forestry, responded to a small brush fire in the vicinity of CR 225 and CR 1475. Shifting winds moved the fire quickly before it could be contained; the fire grew to 250 acres but was 70% contained earlier this evening.

Restoration project of historic Alachua Spring still stalled without funding

While the city leads the project, Alachua County commissioners made clear they will fully support the project once the city buys the land. Alachua to explore Pinkoson Springs ownership with county resources

​May 20th holds deep historical significance in Florida as it marks the day in 1865 when the Emancipation Proclamation was publicly announced in the state. Although President Abraham Lincoln had issued the proclamation on January 1, 1863, it was not until Union troops arrived in Tallahassee and declared freedom for enslaved people on May 20, 1865, that emancipation became a reality in Florida.
