A freeze warning will be in effect for Alachua County on Nov. 11. from midnight to 8 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. The area also will be under a cold weather advisory on Nov. 11 from 2 to 8 a.m.

Residents can expect sub-freezing temperatures as low as 27 degrees, with a wind chill as low as 20 degrees.

A freeze warning is issued when temperatures are forecasted to drop below 32 degrees for an extended period. Such low temperatures can kill some types of commercial crops and residential plants. Temperatures below 28 degrees for an extended period can kill most types of commercial crops and residential plants.

Alachua County is also under a red flag warning on Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. as low humidity and strong winds create the right conditions for the potential spread of wildfire.

The temperature is expected to reach a high of 59 degrees on Nov. 10 with wind gusts as high as 23 mph. In the evening, temperatures are expected to drop to the low 30s with wind gusts as high as 17 mph, according to the NWS.

On Nov. 11, the temperature is expected to reach a high of 55 degrees, plunging to 32 degrees in the evening. Frost in the early hours of the morning is expected.

Will Corless, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, advises people to wear appropriate clothing and protect anything that’s vulnerable to cold temperatures.

“Cover your plants, bring your pets inside. We’re not expecting pipes to freeze over, but take care of everything that’s alive,” he said.

The NWS expects to issue an additional freeze watch early Nov. 12.

An arctic cold front will affect much of the Central and Eastern U.S. bringing record-breaking temperatures to the Southeast, including much of Florida, the weather service reported.
