​​Multiple fire units responded to a vehicle and barn fire in Cross Creek on Sunday night.

​Beginning January 3, 2026, and continuing through December 31, 2026, Alachua County residents can drop off food waste at the County’s five Rural Collection Centers for composting. Alachua County has partnered with O-Town Compost through a Circular Economy Grant, which will divert food waste from the landfill and turn it into compost so it may be used by farmers, gardeners, landscapers, and others.

​Crews from Alachua County Fire Rescue, Cross Creek and Windsor fire departments were dispatched Dec. 28 to reports of a vehicle fire that spread to a large barn in Cross Creek.

Crews arrived on scene to find a vehicle parked inside a large barn. The vehicle had caught fire and spread to the structure. Crews quickly established a water supply from a tanker and deployed two hose lines to extinguish the fire and prevent spread to nearby brush and a nearby structure.

The owner of the property was able to safely remove all animals in the barn prior to the arrival of first responders, and no injuries were reported.

​The county fire marshal was consulted on the cause of the fire and no further investigation was conducted.​

​Alachua County kicked off the celebrations by officially turning 200 years old.
