​Alachua County is under a mosquito-borne illness advisory alongside six other Florida counties as cases of dengue fever are increasing across the state. Under such an advisory, residents should protect themselves from mosquito bites due to local disease activity.

Another three counties in Florida are under a mosquito-borne illness alerts, meaning health officials have detected increased disease activity, disease-carrying mosquitoes or locally transmitted human cases.

From Aug. 23 to 29, the Florida Department of Health reported 32 confirmed cases of dengue fever statewide, bringing the total cases this year to 73. Hillsborough County has reported 59 confirmed dengue cases this year, the highest in the state.

According to the latest Florida Department of Health data, Alachua County reported one confirmed case of West Nile virus in May and two instances of sentinel chickens testing positive for mosquito-borne viruses over the summer.​

​FDOH compiles weekly data on the following mosquito-borne viruses in a report called "Florida Arbovirus Surveillance":

• ​West Nile virus (WNV)
• Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV)
• St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV)
• Dengue virus (DENV)
• Chikungunya virus (CHIKV)
• Zika virus (ZIKV)
• California encephalitis group viruses (CEV)
• Malaria

A mosquito-borne illness advisory has been issued for the following counties:

• ​​Alachua
• Duval
• Leon
• Orange
• Palm Beach
• Pasco
• Walton

A mosquito-borne illness alert has been issued for the following counties:

• ​Hillsborough
• Miami-Dade
• Pinellas

Dengue fever is spread by certain mosquito species and is caused by a virus in the same family as those responsible for West Nile virus and yellow fever.

​Symptoms usually appear 3 to 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito and include:

• ​Fever
• Aches and pains (eye pain, typically behind the eyes, muscle, joint, or bone pain)
• Nausea, vomiting
• Rash

Severe symptoms include:

• ​Belly pain, tenderness
• Vomiting (at least 3 times in 24 hours)
• Bleeding from the nose or gums
• Vomiting blood, or blood in the stool
• Feeling tired, restless, or irritable
  

​Alachua County residents living in the unincorporated area will soon see changes to their residential curbside collection service as part of a new agreement with GFL Solid Waste Southeast, which takes effect Oct. 1, 2026.
