21st Annual Trashformations Recycled Art Show and Competition

trashformationsThe Alachua County Commission, the Alachua County Solid Waste and Resource Recovery Department, and the Florida Museum of National History are hosting the 21st annual Trashformations Recycled Art Show and Competition. This judged student art show helps expand recycling awareness and involvement. The competition begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 22, 2019, at the Florida Museum of Natural History (in the University of Florida Cultural Plaza, S.W. 34th Street and Hull Road, Gainesville). The Trashformations exhibit is free and open to the public.

Completed applications must be submitted online no later than November 15, 2019, by 5 p.m. Completed art pieces are due November 21. All participating artists, their families, and their teachers are invited to a special reception immediately following the awards ceremony.

“The average American creates nearly five pounds of garbage a day, and most of that waste is destined for a landfill,” said Waste Alternatives Manager Jeff Klugh. “Thanks to Alachua County’s young, talented, and creative minds, some of those items are making their way out of the trash and into works of art at the Florida Museum of Natural History.”

Trashformations is a judged student art show and competition, designed to increase waste reduction and recycling awareness. It is also an opportunity to increase public engagement and discussion about reshaping perceptions of “trash” into valuable, reusable commodities. All artwork entered in the contest must be comprised of 70% or more repurposed, salvaged, upcycled, used, recycled, or discarded materials. Winning entries will be awarded cash prizes. Additional award categories will be announced the night of the competition.
