April Environmental Horticulture Programs

The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Environmental Horticulture programs for April 2023. These programs are being offered by Dr. Cynthia Nazario-Leary, Environmental Horticulture Agent, and Master Gardener Volunteers.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ – April 11, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Alachua County Ag Auditorium (22716 W. Newberry Road, Newberry)

Landscapes can be beautiful while conserving water, saving money, and minimizing maintenance. In this workshop, participants learn tips for reducing water, minimizing fertilizer inputs, encouraging pollinators, and protecting water resources in landscapes by following the principles of the Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program.

There is no registration fee, but participants must register online. The class is limited to 100 participants.

Master Gardener Volunteer Program

The Florida Master Gardener Volunteer Program is a volunteer-driven program that benefits UF/IFAS Extension and the citizens of Florida. The program relies on dedicated volunteers interested in gardening and giving back to their communities. With training from UF/IFAS Extension, Master Gardener Volunteers are active in their communities, offering leadership and education in gardening, landscaping, and environmental topics.

The training costs $175.00 and includes 60+ hours of horticultural training over 12 weeks from August to November, a student manual, a handbook, and other educational materials. Once the training course has been completed, Master Gardener Volunteers must volunteer at least 75 hours in the first year to achieve their Master Gardener Volunteer certification.

The Alachua County Master Gardener Volunteer Program will send applications on April 17 for the Fall 2023 Master Gardener Volunteer training course. To receive an application, participants must sign up by April 15.
