October 2023 Commercial Horticulture Programs

Agricultural Crops ImageThe UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Commercial Horticulture programs for October 2023. These programs are offered by Dr. Tatiana Sanchez-Jones, Commercial Horticulture Agent.

Private Applicator & Agricultural Row Crops – A Review – October 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (with Dr. Kevin Korus, Agriculture & Natural Resources Agent), at the Alachua County Ag Auditorium (22716 W. Newberry Road, Newberry)

This workshop is designed to provide training for the Private Applicator and the Agricultural Row Crops pest control licenses. The private applicator license is required for anyone that applies restricted use pesticides to their own farm, greenhouse, or nursery. The class is until 1 p.m. If anyone decides to take the test, the participants can stay after 1 p.m.

New license: After the class concludes, exams will be available to attendees who need a license. Let the Extension office know if you need to test to reserve your spot. To test, please apply for a voucher number prior to the class.

Up to four Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be offered for applicators that already have their licenses. CEUs available include General Standard Core, Ag Row Crop, and Private Applicator.

The registration fee is $25.00 (plus $3.52 Eventbrite fee) and includes handout materials and light refreshments. Participants must register online by October 6. The registration fee after October 6, or if paying at the door will be $35.00 (plus $4.19 Eventbrite fee). This class is limited to 20 participants. There are no refunds for the registration fee.

2023 Ag Entrepreneurship Series (with Dr. Kevin Athearn, Farm Credit of Florida & Center for Rural Enterprise Engagement)

Course 3: Marketing for Your Small Farm
Online access: October 13 – October 26
Live Meeting: October 27, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This short course covers marketing strategy and practical marketing tips for small farmers, including online selling, farm-to-school, SNAP/EBT transactions, and other marketing topics. Course registrants are expected to participate in two weeks of online learning activities (October 13-26) and attend a live session on October 27, either via Zoom or at the Alachua County Ag Auditorium (22716 W. Newberry Road, Newberry).

The registration fee is $45.00 and participants must register online. Course enrollment may close prior to the deadline if capacity is reached. There are no refunds for the registration fee.

Limited Commercial Landscape Maintenance Workshop – October 17, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (license renewal from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.), at the UF/IFAS Extension Duval County (1010 North McDuff Avenue, Jacksonville)

This is a review class for the Limited Commercial Landscape license. Participants should study prior to attending the workshop, especially if they are planning on testing. Exams will be available to take the morning following the workshop at the extension office or online at your convenience.

Those wanting to take the exam must register to receive a voucher. Click on “residential pest control” and “Exam SignUp.” You must bring your voucher number with you to take the exam. Books are not provided but can be pre-ordered online. The books required are SM 1 (Applying Pesticides Correctly), SP 499 (Weeds), and SM 82 (Limited Commercial Landscape Maintenance).

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be available for both the four-hour renewal class or for the entire day in the following categories: three units General Standard Core, three units Ornamental & Turf, three units Limited Lawn & Ornamental, three units Limited Landscape Maintenance, three units Private Applicator and three units Right-of-Way or two units General Standard Core, two units Ornamental & Turf, two units Limited Lawn & Ornamental, two units Limited Landscape Maintenance, two units Private Applicator and two units Right-of-Way.

The registration fee is $30.00 (plus $3.85 Eventbrite fee) and includes lunch and materials. Participants must register online by October 13. The registration fee after October 13 or if paying at the door will be $40.00 (plus $4.52 Eventbrite fee).

Green Industries Best Management Practices – October 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the at the Alachua County Ag Auditorium (22716 W. Newberry Road, Newberry)

Florida law states that all commercial fertilizer applicators must have a certificate from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS). To get this certificate, each commercial applicator must be trained in the Green Industries Best Management Practices and receive a certificate of completion from UF/IFAS and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. This class begins at 8:15 a.m.

Up to four Continued Education Units (CEUS) for interested participants will be available in the following categories: General Standard Core, Provate Applicator, Ornamental & Turf, Limited Urban Fertilizer, Limited Commercial Landscape Maintenance, Limited Lawn and Ornamental, Commercial Lawn and Ornamental.

The registration fee is $30.00 (plus $3.85 Eventbrite fee) and includes lunch and materials. Participants must register online by October 16. The registration fee after October 16 or if paying at the door will be $40.00 (plus $4.52 Eventbrite fee). The class is limited to 20 participants. There are no refunds for the registration fees.
