October Commercial Horticulture Programs

grassThe UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Commercial Horticulture Programs for October 2019. These programs are being offered by Dr. Tatiana Sanchez, Commercial Horticulture Agent, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 N.E. 39th Avenue, Gainesville).

Developing a Farm Business Plan – October 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Participants learn to conduct market research and how to use SWOT analysis. They also learn to develop a mission statement, marketing plan, operations plan, human resource plan, financial plan, and risk management plan.

The registration fee is $30.00 (primary participant) and $20.00 (secondary participant). A late fee of $10.00 will be applied to registrations after September 23, 2019. The registration includes materials (primary participant only), lunch, and refreshments. Participants must register online (those needing assistance with registering can call the Extension Office at 352-955-2402).

Green Industries Best Management Practices – October 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This workshop is designed to provide training in Best Management Practices for anyone working in the lawn, landscape, pest control, or municipal grounds areas. This is a required training class for all commercial and institutional fertilizer applicators in Alachua County according to the Alachua County Fertilizer Standards and Management Practices Code.

Best Management Practices (BMPs) are focused on reducing non-point source pollution resulting from fertilization or pesticide application.  In some areas, applicators need to be certified in the BMPs to be able to bid on jobs or have commercial customers. 

Pesticide license holders earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs). For CEUs, participants must get form signed before leaving. Continuing Education Units will be offered in the following categories: 2 Core and 2 Ornamental & Turf, 2 Limited Commercial Landscape Maintenance categories.

The registration fee is $25.00 (includes lunch and materials). Participants must register online (those needing assistance with registering can call the Extension Office at 352-955-2402) by October 11. There are no refunds for the registration fee.
