January Environmental and Community Horticulture Programs

The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Environmental and Community Horticulture programs for January 2019. These programs are offered by the Alachua County Master Gardeners, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 N.E. 39th Avenue, Gainesville) unless otherwise indicated.

Starting Seeds – January 3, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Newberry Branch Library (110 S. Seaboard Drive, Newberry), and is conducted by Brenda Campbell, Master Gardener\

Participants learn to start seeds indoors as an alternative to using transplants. This presentation will discuss how seeds grow, the timing of planting seeds, supplies needed for starting seeds, and how to make a grow light. There will not be actual seed planting.

There is no registration fee. Participants must register by calling 352-337-6209 (voicemail). This program is limited to 40 participants.

Vegetable Gardening for Beginners – January 14, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Conducted by Colin Burrows, Master Gardener

Participants learn about an innovative way to grow vegetables. The class also includes vegetable gardening basics and teaches how to use raised beds for increased efficiency. There is a demonstration garden located on site. 

Participants must register online. The registration fee is $10, and the deadline is January 13. The workshop is limited to 45 participants. There are no refunds for registration fees.
