Alachua County has two Truth and Reconciliation events scheduled. On Friday, February 7, 2020, the County invites residents to a Memorial Service for the Victims of Lynching in Alachua County. On Monday, February 17, 2020, the County Commission is holding a community workshop about the Truth and Reconciliation Community Remembrance Project.
The Memorial Service for the Victims of Lynching in Alachua County on Friday, February 7, 2020, begins at 6 p.m. at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church (630 N.W. 2nd Street, Gainesville). The event is free and open to the public.
The Memorial Service includes prayers, reading of scriptures, a reading of victims’ names, a candlelight ceremony, singing, and remarks by family members and community leaders.
The community workshop about the Truth and Reconciliation Community Remembrance Project on Monday, February 17, 2020, begins at 6 p.m. at the Senior Recreation Center (5701 N.W. 34th Blvd, Gainesville).
At the workshop, the County will discuss plans for commemorating and recognizing victims of lynching with plans to erect historical markers throughout the County, which will create memorials that acknowledge the horrors of racial injustice. The public is encouraged to attend and learn how to participate in this communitywide effort.
