Volunteer crisis line counselors needed

​The Alachua County Victim Services and Rape Crisis Center is seeking caring, compassionate volunteers to serve as crisis line counselors. The next training class begins Tuesday, March 3, 2026, and runs for six weeks. The center asks for a minimum commitment of nine months. There is no fee for the training, and applicants do not need to possess any specific degrees or experience to attend.

O-Town Compost to offer free 2.5-gallon kitchen caddy to Alachua County residents on Feb. 21

​O-Town Compost will be at the Alachua County Rural Collection Centers on Saturday, February 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., distributing free Kitchen Caddies to Alachua County residents. This initiative aims to encourage residents to divert food scraps and organic waste from the landfill by participating in composting efforts.

Alachua County reviewing 4 projects at Archer Road/Tower Road activity center

Fire crews respond to residential fire in Hawthorne

​At about 6:24 p.m. on February 17, units from Alachua County Fire Rescue, Windsor Fire Department, Melrose Fire Department, and the Cross Creek Fire Department responded to reports of a house fire in Hawthorne. Units arrived to find a single-story residence with heavy fire showing from the roof.
